Terms of Use

Last updated September 19, 2026

These terms of use are the agreement between you and Maskil Works LLC (“we”, “us”), doing business as Praxis Books, for https://praxis-books.com and the Praxis Books Shopify app. By creating an account, installing the app, or continuing to use the service after notice of a change, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

The Service

Praxis Books is a platform for writing, versioning, and reading digital workbooks. Authors publish books. Readers work through a book copy—a stored instance of a book that holds reading position and exercise answers for that copy. Merchants can sell access through Shopify checkout. The product is still early; features and availability can change.

We may change or discontinue features. If we shut the service down or permanently remove access to a book you paid for through us, we will say so when we can. Purchases paid to a Shopify merchant are between you and that merchant; see Purchases and Access.

Where We Offer the Service

We currently offer Praxis Books from the United States and do not offer the service to people in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom. If that changes, we will update these terms.

Accounts

You need an account for most of the service. Accounts are for adults. You are responsible for the credentials you use and for activity under your account, including when a minor you are responsible for uses a book under your signed-in session or license. Keep your sign-in details to yourself. Tell us at legal@praxis-books.com if you think someone else is using your account. We do not knowingly create accounts for children under 13; if one exists, contact us and we will delete it.

You can sign in with email or with an identity provider such as Google or Microsoft. Those providers have their own terms. We only use the sign-in information they send to create or recognize your Praxis Books account.

If You Are a Reader or Author

You keep ownership of the books, assets, and reader responses you create. So that we can host and display them, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive license to store, reproduce, and show that content as needed to operate the service—for example, to render a book to a licensed reader or to make a backup. If you delete your account, we may keep manuscripts and assets with authorship anonymized so other people’s books and licenses still work; see our privacy policy.

You are responsible for the content you publish and for having the rights to it. Buying or being granted access to a book gives you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to read and work through that book on Praxis Books for your own use. It does not let you redistribute the book, sell access to it, or use it outside the service except as we expressly allow. It does not transfer the author’s copyright unless the author says so in writing.

If You Are a Shopify Merchant

If you install the Praxis Books Shopify app, you are responsible for your store, your products, how you describe them to buyers, and privacy law that applies to your customers. You grant us the API access listed in the app so we can read paid orders and write fulfillments. You must comply with Shopify’s terms.

We use shop and order data only to provide digital book access and to operate the app. Our privacy policy describes when we are a controller and when we act closer to your processor for checkout email. These terms do not waive those roles.

Purchases and Access

When a book is sold through Shopify, Shopify handles checkout and payment. We do not store card numbers. After a qualifying paid order, we create an access entitlement and send an activation link to the purchaser email Shopify gives us. Access is granted when that entitlement is claimed by a matching Praxis Books account. Purchases and activation emails are intended for the adult buyer or administrator.

A full refund of a line item may revoke the related access. We aim to process that revocation when Shopify notifies us of the refund; timing can depend on Shopify and on when the next access check runs. A partial refund of a line item does not revoke access. We may also revoke access for fraud or a terms violation. Disputes about payment or refund amount are between you and the Shopify merchant (or Shopify), not a claim that we must restore paid access on Praxis.

Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules. Security researchers who want to report a vulnerability may email legal@praxis-books.com before testing further.

Third-Party Services

The service depends on other companies, including WorkOS, Google, Microsoft, Shopify, our hosting and database providers, file storage, and email delivery. Their terms and privacy policies apply to what they do. How we use personal information with those processors is described in our privacy policy.

Availability and Changes

We provide the service as it exists today, without a promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or unchanged. We may add, change, or remove features. We may also change these terms. The date at the top of the page will change when we do. If we make material changes, we will notify account holders (for example by email to the address on the account, or by an in-product notice). If you keep using the service after a change, you accept the new terms, except where the law requires a different form of consent.

Disclaimers

The service is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that books, purchases, or access grants will be free of defects or delays.

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Maskil Works LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill, arising from the service or these terms. Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the fees you paid Maskil Works LLC for the service in the twelve months before the claim, or fifty U.S. dollars, whichever is greater. That amount does not include what you paid a Shopify merchant for a book. Those merchants are separate businesses; their checkout is not a payment to us.

Some places do not allow these limits. If that is true where you live, our liability is limited to the maximum the law allows.

Termination

You can stop using the service at any time. You can ask us to delete your account by emailing legal@praxis-books.com or from your account page when signed in. We may suspend or end access if you break these terms, if we have to for legal or security reasons, or if we shut the service down. If we discontinue the service entirely, we are not obligated to refund amounts you paid a Shopify merchant; any refund is between you and that merchant unless the law requires otherwise. Sections that by their nature should survive—such as ownership, disclaimers, and liability limits—remain in effect.

Privacy and Your Data

Our privacy policy describes how we collect and use personal information. When signed in, you can generate a summary of your data or delete your account from Account.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where mandatory consumer protections in your place of residence say otherwise.

General

If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies. These terms are the entire agreement between you and us for the service, and they replace prior agreements on the same subject. You may not assign these terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
